Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold...

Watched The Hobbit tonight (on our projector & big screen) and loved it unreservedly.

Especially Thorin.

He's like the anti-Aragorn.

Doctor, Who?

So, finally finished getting caught up with Doctor Who, so I'm all ready for the new season, which is a long way off, sob.

Anyway, [profile] cingergal, I really liked the finale. Quite a bit. :-)

ST: Into Darkness (without spoilers)

Just got home from seeing Star Trek: Into Darkness, and my head is full. LOVED IT!!!! So much action! So much fun. My one complaint from the first movie is that I did not care for Simon Pegg's Scotty. That was entirely fixed in this movie. He was as awesome as the rest of the cast. And Benedict Cumberbatch was beyond awesome. So I am a very happy Trek girl. \o/

The Great Lactose Experiment

So, I've mentioned before that I have a problem with cow's milk. I actually went to an allergist about it and discovered that it wasn't a true allergy (I don't start to react until I begin to digest it) and that I was actually "cow dairy intolerant." I've been careful to make the distinction between that and lactose intolerance... because I don't have a lactose intolerance reaction. There are no digestive problems, no gas. It's all respiratory... stuffy nose, plugged ears and, if I get enough of it, my lungs get in on the action (and if I have even a little over a sustained period of time, I get sinus infections and bronchitis).

The thing is, I remember going off milk as a child for these very same issues... and at one point being given a prescription for this stuff that was described as being an enzyme (which I now think might have been lactase), then later using Lactaid when it came out and having it be relatively effective. Eventually, it seemed like I'd grown out of the problem and didn't think about it again until a few years ago when my doctor recommended I go dairy free for a bit again and see if that solved my sinus infection problem. And it did.

So, for the last few years, I've just avoided cow's milk... and found that I actually don't care for the stuff much (it tastes sort of rancid to me now) and I'm perfectly happy with substitutes. But I recently remembered the enzyme treatments and using Lactaid and decided to try an experiment. I picked up a thing of Yoplait Lactose Free yogurt and tried eating it... and had no reaction.

So, of course, I had to devise a double-blind study.Collapse )

BTW, the other thing I discovered is that pre-flavored yogurt is WAY too sweet. I've gotten so used to adding just a bit of Torani syrup to plain goat yogurt.

Original Story; Go With the Flow

This story was originally published as a Charity Sip by Torquere for the It Gets Better campaign, but the rights are back with me, so I'm sharing it. It's sweet and romantic rather than heavy on the smut and it's around 7,600 words.

Fic: Divided Destiny. Chapter 1.

Hello BtVS/AtS fans! I'm still here! *waves*

So, Buffy's anniversary. I wanted to do something to mark it, but couldn't think of anything... Until I remembered this fic. I started it back in 2006 or 2007, and wrote 14 chapters (amounting to about 50,000 words) but never posted anything because this story (unlike pretty much all my other stuff) has A Proper Plot and A Story Arc and I didn't want to joss anything in the story by writing my self into a corner (seriously, it's long & complex). Plus those 14 chapters were only about half the fic (or a third...), and I didn't want to leave forever between updates. However, as you can see, I was so invested that I got ruuger to make me an icon, and kathyh even semi-beta'd the chapters. ♥

ANYWAY! In honour of the 10 year anniversary I thought 'Sod it, I love this fic, I'll start posting!' And then hopefully people will nag me into finishing it, because it's a properly EPIC story with world building and character development and PLOT and all kinds of things that people should appreciate. Of course fandom is now a fraction of what it was, but I'm hoping to lure in a few readers for old times' sake... Because I'm seriously proud of this fic. (My guarantee to you: it's better than the comics!) Figure I'll post a chapter every few weeks, and then hopefully be able to get started with writing again once I reach the end of what I've got...

Divided Destiny

Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Rating: Teen.
Characters: Spike, Angel, Illyria, Buffy, Scoobies + cameos from more or less everyone in the 'verse.
Feedback: Is bloody ambrosia! (The secret ingredient is otter...)
Setting and Summary: This is the sequel to ‘Maybe Someday’ (or, more accurately, Maybe Someday was the prequel for this), in which Spike, Angel and Illyria turned up in Rome and encountered Buffy (Sept. 2004). During the following week Buffy and Spike started dating (and working through their issues), Illyria picked up some handy portal opening powers and Angel got a lead on someone who used to know the Wolf, Ram and Hart. This fic starts the evening after that fic ended. The story chronicles Angel, Spike and Illyria’s attempt at taking down W&H. Can it be done? And if so, what will the price be? (That’s all the warning I’m going to give you, OK? Don’t yell at me later. Also see quote below.)

SPIKE: What do you think all this means for that Shanshu bugaboo? If we make it through this, does one of us get to be a real boy?
ANGEL: Who you kidding? We're not gonna make it through.

it's going to be one of those days

The phones are still boned. Apparently it's not just us, either. Receptionist knows of at least one other local business struggling. Our cable company, bought out last summer, finally transitioned over to them like a week ago. I blame that.

Then the printer/copier. I made a bunch of copies this morning, no problem. I tried to print something and it didn't work. Tried again, nothing. Cleared the cache, nothing. Turned off the machine. Turned it back on.

Nothing.

No power.

So, I changed sockets to our power strip.

No power.

Pulled out the machine from the wall and it came back on. Loose cord? Didn't like being so close to the wall? That happens to our wireless stick--if it brushes the wall, the wireless goes down.

Technology man...

Luckily I still have internet. Hope to watch Revolution from this past Monday while folding and sending out invoices this afternoon while boss is in a trial.

He's gone most of the day (gone now) but I have tons of work to do.

I did get all Mating Games things done and have written the Fullmoon Ficlet, just need to edit it. Then I need to continue it because it's the beginning of the second part of what seems to be a fucking new Peter/Stiles mating bite series. Really, GIVE ME ANOTHER TROPE!!!!

I need to write one more ficlet and I'll have bingo for Teen Wolf. The deadline is next Friday and I'd still like to get the other three Peter/Stiles ones to make a down through the across I'll have. One of them is definitely doable with this new series--knotting. Which, surprisingly, I've never written.

After the Royals lost again--really, giving up four homers in a NON-homerun park???? I watched the last two Vampire Diaries. Yay!!! I love that 'ship. Always have. But then, bad boys, man!

a few possible spoilers but mostly comparisons to BuffyCollapse )

Well, need to work...

Still stuck with phone only.

Memorial Day weekend. The smell of smoke and meat, the firecrackers and occaisional gunshots. The guy who was arrested by tge cops a while back from next door is back----and had a showdown in the street with four extremely loud women who coukd be heard at least a block away. My neighbors next door do not have inside voices. They also seem to think that claiming it's....simething something day means it's get out of jail free and they can do whatever they want----including parking a vehicle ten feet from my front door and turning the stereo up so loud it ceases to be a sound and becomes instead something like the blast wave of ...something.

The neihhbors on the other side, by contrast, let me know they were having an engagement party. I missed it. Their idea of talking does not involve doing so so loudly that it blasts through my house. A group of guys gsthered in front of the house, passed a bottle or can discreetly, and.....their voices could not be heard at all. Not one syllable. There were was no garbage ir litter the next morning either.

I'd like to clone them.

Got out one of my swords last night and sharpened it, then put it back beneath my pillow. Very therapeutic.

Someone lijes to burn leaves around here, even though it's been illegal forever. There's going to be an awful lot of drinking this weekend, and nothing memorial about it, except perhaps by my neighbors on the one side. They obviously care about their behavior.

Maybe I can get stuff done. Back hadn't been hurting too bad. I have laundry to do, maybe I'll plant some stuff. When the neighbors aren't around. Loud Stereo People will adk you if it's too loud, and even tell you gaily to just ask, but strangely enough, they apparently never notice the volume at which the cops get called. They do, however, get offended when you shout to be heard over the bass, because that is SO rude. They're very sensitive like that....but they think that their music is somehow contained inside the flimsy drywall that makes up the badly-renovated walls of this latest rental. I've had some neighbors that let slip they'd been booted from two places already that year. They always leave holes in walks and huge piles of garbage. One neighbor set fire to what looked like a couple of rooms of the stuff----which she had dumped on someone else's property, so the city could fine them and not her.

I need to get out of here.

Thing that doesn't make sense

I don't know if pointing out minor plotholes in a radio programme 35 years after broadcast is really the done thing, but, re the Hitchhiker's Guide entry on the Haggunenons, how the heck does a book whose sole entry on the planet Earth reads (at the time) "Harmless," know who Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton were..?

*sigh*

I love my job. I love the company I work for. but man alive, right now I don't think I can call them an organisation, because I think they'd struggle to organise an opportunity to get inebriated in a manufacturer of alcoholic beverages.

'Cos this was in the latest email round robin:

Don’t forget, if you’d like to remain, make yourself known to us by email to [address@redacted] by close of play this Friday 24 May and we will work with you to see if this is feasible.

I mean, it's not a guarantee, but I might not be out of work after June 10th after all...

1. I need information and local assistance for her.
She does not have a computer. I might be able to change that.
2. She just got a whole bunch more cats dumped on her, including bottle
babies, so she's frazzled. If you're sending her food, could you send a
bit more?

...I swear to God, I'm moving her to Michigan when I move. But until
then.....??
